Obtain Cheaper Health Insurance Rates By Avoiding Alcohol, Smoking, And Applying Early

Wednesday 30 January 2013

If you're like most consumers you probably on a glide path to start contemplating the purchase of health insurance when you're much older then your current age. In fact, studies show that many people don't even consider health insurance until after they are married or have children. Although it may seem unnecessary, the best time to start thinking about health insurance is while you are young and still relatively healthy. The fact is, the longer you wait to obtain health insurance the higher probability that you will end up paying a higher insurance rate or premium assuming you are still healthy enough to qualify for health insurance.

Research shows that when compared side by side a person in their twenties or thirties will be able to obtain a larger health insurance policy at a cheaper rate then a person who is fifty or older. Good health and habits also play a large role in determining your health insurance coverage and overall associated costs. Someone who is healthy, doesn't smoke and avoids excessive use of alcohol and stays away from drugs will also enjoy the same benefits of a larger policy value with a lower cost when compared to someone who is out of shape, in bad health and with lifestyle habits that are truly bad for their body, mind and health.

Sadly, some consumers are under the misconception that they can get by without telling their potential health insurance provider negative aspects dealing with their health in order to qualify for better rates and coverage amounts. Unfortunately what those same folks fail to realize is that normally most health insurance companies and providers require a medical pre-screening or physical before they actually provide health insurance coverage. Typically, this medical screening combined with a thorough look over a person's previous medical records identifies any current health ailments that exist with the potential insurance client and as a result the health insurance coverage amounts and rates are adjusted accordingly.

If you exam the economics side of health insurance you will see that the health insurance companies want to insure you while you are in your best possible health. For this it means more money taken in from the premiums you pay and less money paid out based on your lack of needing to receive regular medical care outside of routine appointments, checkups and of course, medical emergencies. Health insurance companies have gotten so good at this that they have three different types of coverage rates or premiums they classify consumers into based on their health. Those categories are standard, preferred and preferred plus. The preferred plus premium is for folks that are non-smokers and in excellent health continuing on down to the standard premium for consumers with minor health issues and who may have previously smoked but are no longer active in that habit.

Health insurance companies consider smoking a big deal so always make sure to tell the truth when filling out your health insurance application and receiving your medical exam and physical. In fact, some companies actually test a urine sample in order to determine if you are an active smoker. The bottom line up front is in order to enjoy lower rates for your health insurance you really should abstain from smoking. Drinking alcohol is also considered harmful to your health and viewed by many insurance companies in a negative light. You will need to check each individual insurance provider's policy in terms of alcohol consumption. Some have no issue with consuming alcoholic beverages as long as there is no prior evidence of abuse or previous treatments/rehabilitation that were required and yet others will drastically increase your insurance rates based on the health problems and mortality rate from drinking.

If you're still reasonably healthy then age can be the least discriminating factor when it comes to purchasing affordable health insurance. Generally speaking many consumers under the age of sixty can still enjoy reasonable health insurance rates and adequate coverage so long as there are no major health problems or illnesses to contend with.

Eat for Health - Let Your Food Be Your Medicine

Sunday 27 January 2013

Your health is determined in large part by what you do on a daily basis. Your diet, level of physical activity, environmental factors and level of stress play a significant role in your overall state of health and well-being. The following quote by Hippocrates, known as the father of modern medicine, states that what you eat for health reasons is very important.

Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well. Our food should be our medicine. Our medicine should be our food. But to eat when you are sick is to feed your sickness.

Hippocrates

Greek physician (460 BC - 377 BC)

Modern society has strayed from this ancient model by creating fast food and processed food, utilizing chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the production of food, genetically modifying seed to allow the use of stronger pesticides, and breaking down and chemically altering foods to aid in the production and taste of processed foods (for example, high fructose corn syrup and monosodium glutamate).

The cumulative effect of these modifications to whole, nutritious foods is a breakdown of health on a very basic level. To eat for health requires nutrient dense, whole foods with no added chemicals or chemically altered substances. By introducing chemical fertilizer and pesticide residue into your system you increase the level of toxins in your body. This added burden can lead to disease and illness.

In response to the health problems that occur due to poor dietary habits and lifestyle choices, modern medicine prescribes pharmaceutical drugs to suppress symptoms of disease. In the United States it is against the law to claim that natural products cure or treat any disease. The pharmaceutical drugs the doctors prescribe do not cure these diseases either. They merely lessen the symptoms of one disease, and cause side effects that prompt the doctor to prescribe more medications to address.

The answer is to eat for health by researching whole foods that promote good health and well-being. This will take some effort on your part, as the FDA, the organization empowered with protecting the quality and safety of food and drugs, purposefully prevents the communication of scientific proof of the health benefits of foods. They have actually told walnut and cherry growers that they cannot tell the public about the health benefits of their products, yet they allow Frito Lay to post the health benefits of potato chips on their website. It doesn't take a lot of research to decide which product has more natural health benefits!

To eat for health, choose organic fruits and vegetables, grass fed, free range animal products, raw dairy and organic whole grains. Use olive oil, fish, nuts and seeds and organic avocados as sources of good fats and omega-3 fats. Use healthier cooking methods such as grilling, roasting or baking rather than frying when cooking foods, and avoid adding empty calories in the form of gravies, sauces and dressings. When you eat for health you will find more energy for exercise, improved sleep and reduced stress, which all combine to improve your health and well-being.

Magnetic Therapy - The New Natural Health Treatment

Saturday 26 January 2013

Perhaps you have a chronic health condition and you have sought out various types of alternative treatments to find relief. Have you ever checked into the advantages there are to using natural health care for another method of pain relief or to alleviate symptoms of your disorder? Magnetic therapy is just one of many forms of alternative methods that many people are using for the treatment of a variety of ailments and health related issues.

Maybe you have never before heard of this natural health therapy, but are wondering about different methods of treating your particular issue. Magnetic therapy is done by using magnets on certain parts of the body and has been used for many centuries throughout Asia, India, Greece and Egypt. It has only recently begun to gain popularity in Europe and North America in the past few years, and is still regarded as experimental.

The art of magnetic treatment has been used on more than 150 million people all over the world and clinical studies have shown its effectiveness in pain relief, health and all-over wellness. The therapy provides relief for a wide variety of ailments and there have been no reported cases of illness or injury from the use of magnetic treatments. For this reason alone it is a very popular alternative treatment that many people are now using to relieve common health problems.

Everything on Earth -- whether it be plant, animal or human being -- responds to a magnetic field. It is important for people to note that while magnetic health therapy has many wonderful qualities, it is not to be considered as a cure for serious medical conditions. Magnetic therapy should only be used as a treatment alternative and natural therapy for the human body. For these reasons alone, it is a good idea to read up about everything concerning the world of magnetic health treatment, so that you understand everything involved.

An emerging new technology in magnetic health therapy is Pulsed Magnetic Therapy. This new technology promises to take natural health care to a new level. With Pulsed Magnetic Therapy an additional therapeutic element is introduced. That is the element of electrical current. Just like the minute electrical currents that flow in the brain (know as Alpha waves) there are small electrical currents that flow within the body. Pulsed Magnetic Therapy acts like a small electrical motor to induce minute electrical current flow at targeted treatment points along channels of the body. This has the same effect as acupuncture and produces the same medical benefits. Common health problems, pain, and other health related issues including immune system abnormalities can be treated naturally.

Magnetic health therapy is a wonderful treatment alternative for such conditions as sinus pain, general and migraine headaches, stress and anxiety reduction, skin allergy, improving the immune system and several other ailments and disorders. If you suffer from chronic or acute pain, checking into magnetic therapy may be a good alternative to some of the more invasive treatments you may have already tried. Magnetic health therapy is not designed to replace any type of medical treatment, it is only to be used as a natural therapy in conjunction with maintaining a healthful lifestyle and doing what is best for your overall health.

Drug Abusers and Small Businesses

Wednesday 23 January 2013

Drug use in the United States is rising at an alarming pace, and this is being felt in no greater place than the small American business.

While substance abuse is a valid concern for businesses of any size, smaller businesses are at a greater risk of drug abusers damaging or completely destroying the company.

More drug abusers work there.
As far as American employees go as a whole, about half work at large corporations and the other half work at small business. The landscape shifts dramatically when looking at drug users.

90% of drug users work at small businesses. There's more than one reason for this:

1: Smaller businesses often do not require new employees to undergo drug testing during the hiring process. Drug users have a better chance of 'slipping through' to jobs than at a larger corporation.

2: Small businesses often do not have an established drug-free workplace policy.

3. Owners of smaller businesses often have a more personal relationship with their employees than larger business owners. This creates a more difficult and complex situation when dealing with a drug abusing employee. Small business owners are more likely to turn a blind eye to drug abuse and give more 'second chances' than owners of larger companies.

The large amount of drug users leaves small businesses extremely vulnerable to high costs of employing drug abusers.

-The 'dead weight' costs. Drug users are more likely to miss work, be less productive, and be less focused. While the cost of these actions is difficult to quantify, it can add up to lots of dollars down the drain.

-The 'lost customer' costs. An unproductive employee may mishandle customer requests, needs, and complaints, causing disgruntled customers to take their business elsewhere. A small company most likely cannot absorb losing customers as easily nor can attract customers as quickly as a larger company. These losses can greatly impact the bottom line.

-The legal costs. Smaller businesses pockets are not as deep as larger corporations. If an impaired employee causes an accident or injury, the resulting lawsuits, workers comp claims, and property damage could devastate a small business much faster than a large corporation.

-The co-worker costs. Employees of small businesses work closely together, and a drug abusing employee can strangle the productivity. Knowing other employees are abusing drugs can bring down morale. Workers may also have to redo work or cover for a drug abusing co-worker. The top producing employees may become disgruntled by the drug abusers performance to the point that they may leave the company.

Smaller business owners need to be aware of this trend and take steps to protect their company from drug abusing employees.

Step 1: Implement drug screening as part of the pre-employment screening process. A good portion of drug testing is relatively low-cost. This step can bring about a high level of benefit by screening out drug abusers BEFORE they are hired.

Step 2: Check out OSHA's website. There are lots of free tools and resources available to create a drug free workplace.

Step 3: It's advisable to have a written plan of how and on what occasions your company screens for drugs, and the actions that will be taken if an employee has drugs in their system. Stay consistent with that plan.

These 3 steps are low cost to the company and a good starting point to minimize a company's risk and expense of employing drug abusers.

Having a program in place can play a vital role in increasing productivity, minimizing accidents, decreasing theft, and improving safety and attendance. And, for small companies, this can be the difference in thriving or going out of business.

'Reality' OF UK Poverty Capatured In Online BBC Storyville Films

Three eye-opening JRF/BBC documentaries are now available to watch online.

Filmmaker Andy Glynne discusses the Why Poverty? series and explains:

As a filmmaker, I'd travelled a lot, and filmed the images that we still associate with the word 'poverty': malnourished children in sub-Saharan Africa; those with no roofs over their heads or without access to water. Poverty was, I had thought, an absence of the fundamentals to live by, and we filmmakers trooped around the world highlighting the inequalities between the rich North and the poor South, bringing awareness to a problem far away, somewhere on the other side of the world – somewhere that, well, wasn't here.

Because – as the notion goes – inequalities on this scale don't exist here in the UK, do they? Well, yes and no. It was when embarking on this project that the notion of relative poverty – in which poverty can exist for those who are considerably worse off than the majority of the population – became of interest.

As we researched stories about poverty in the UK, we became aware of the ways in which being relatively poor can have a plethora of horrible consequences. And although such consequences may seem to lack the immediacy of being acutely life-threatening, they can nevertheless insidiously create physical, psychological and social inequalities on a hugely significant scale.

The three films are available to watch online on the Joseph Rowntree Foundation website: http://www.jrf.org.uk/blog/2013/01/poverty-captured-bbc-storyville-films

How the latest research into child trafficking in the UK should inform social work practice - 10/16/2012 - Community Care

Social workers should not discount children’s claims to have been trafficked even if they sound extraordinary, says Emma Kelly, a lecturer in social work at University of Salford.

Disabled People Could "Miss Out" Under Social Care Reform

Monday 21 January 2013

Photograph by Smerikal
Research carried out for the charities Mencap, Scope, the National Autistic Society, Leonard Cheshire Disability and Sense indicates that adults with disabilities in England are being deprived of basic care and support and are at risk of being forgotten in the wider reform of the social care system.

Much of the focus on care has been centred around the crisis facing the elderly. However, a coalition of charities has warned people with disabilities under the age of 65 are being neglected too.

Ministers are soon expected to announce a cap will be placed on the costs people face for care - but this will largely benefit older people who have built up substantial assets through savings, pensions and property.

Younger adults with disabilities are less likely to have such assets, and as a result get care free through the means-tested system.

About 500,000 working age adults get social care support - a third of the total number getting help. But the figure has been falling in recent years as councils have started to ration care so that only those with the most severe needs get help.

Research carried out for the charities indicated there were now 90,000 fewer people receiving help than in 2008 - at a time when there are more people living with disabilities.

The study also warned if the reform of the system was pushed through it could lead to more being excluded. This is because the government's desire to have national eligibility criteria could result in those areas that have yet to ration care imposing tighter restrictions.

Meanwhile, the research also raised concerns about the quality of services being provided. A survey of 600 people receiving social care found nearly 40% were failing to get enough help to ensure their basic needs, including eating properly, washing and dressing, were met. Overall, the report estimated there was a £1.2bn funding gap for younger disabled adults.

Great Expectations - Health Fitness Leanness Without Suffering By Clarence Bass

Sunday 20 January 2013

At seventy years of age, Clarence Bass continues to set and achieve physical goals that would challenge many people half or even a third his age. It's the challenge that Bass enjoys and has kept him training for all these decades. "Great Expectations" is his newest book, and in it he shares wisdom that he has gained not only through study of fitness and health, but by applying his study to his own life and using his body as an experiment in health, fitness and longevity.

One of the things I particularly like about Clarence is his complete honesty and willingness to share not only his triumphs but his difficulties as well. I thought it was courageous to discuss his medical conditions with such blunt honesty and openness. Learning about how he underwent hip replacement, and reading about his tale of the catheter where enlightening in that while I hope I never have to undergo either, I recognize that as we age we all will face different health concerns and knowing that by keeping ourselves in good physical condition we can better cope and overcome these difficulties. Clarence's telling of how he overcame his medical difficulties, including showing the scar from him hip replacement on the cover of the book, will undoubtedly encourage others to overcome and triumph over their own difficulties regardless of their age.

Another thing I really like about all of Clarence's books, this one included, is that he not only shares resources, but the practical ways he incorporates his research into his training and lifestyle and then encourages the reader to make healthy training and eating their own. Not to copy exactly what he does, but to take the principles that he teaches and make the training and eating habits that will ensure your own success. I also enjoy the stores and examples he shared by others, especially Dan Sawyer's advice in the last chapter.

It is also interesting to see how Clarence's training has changed over the years. This is a natural progression. As all of us age and go through different periods regarding our physical goals, our training will change as well. I really like that Clarence writes about what he does, and why; what he has changed, and why.

Here is a little of what you will learn in this book:

Chapter 1: Great Expectations. Learn about attitude, expectations, and the competitive edge among other mental elements of training.

Chapter 2: Overcoming. This is the chapter where Clarence tells of his medical problems. He shares his stories and experiences so that you can learn that your fitness level will impact your outcome, you can learn that you are in charge, and that the ultimate responsibility to help yourself resides with you.

Chapter 3: Take It Off, Keep It Off. Learn about metabolism, exercise, fat loss and eating.

Chapter 4: Exercise for Life. Learn about exercise including strength training and aerobic exercise.

Chapter 5: About Training. This chapter covers concepts such as overload and rest, training frequency, slow lifting, balance and more.

Chapter 6: About Diet (Not Dieting). An excellent overview of healthy eating. I also like how Clarence tells you things that he eats and why. The section on every meal counting is also very important to know.

Chapter 7: Eating for the Peak. Throughout the years, photos of Clarence at his peaks have been extremely motivating. The photos of him at 70 still inspire. Many half or even a third his age would like to look that good. In this chapter he explains how he prepares for peaking.

Chapter 8: Training for the Peak. Bass continues with his advice on peaking by sharing how he trains for peaking as well.

Chapter 9: Motivation and Change. Clarence says you should plan for success and start with motivation. Good chapter with advice not only from Clarence but some great words from Dan Sawyer as well to help you get and stay motivated toward healthy living.

"Great Expectations" is an excellent addition to anyone's health and fitness bookshelf. It is motivating and informative. In fact, if you only had room for a few health and fitness books, Clarence's "Lean For Life," "Challenge Yourself," and "Great Expectation" should be on the short list. These three books together provide such a wealth of information and are extremely motivating to see how Clarence and his wife Carol have lived these principles and the success they have achieved because of their healthy lifestyle.

On pages 145-146, Clarence states that some people in their 20s didn't relate to his writings in Muscle & Fitness back in the 80s, but now that he is older and they are in their 40s, they relate to his message more. Perhaps they can follow in his footsteps by benefiting from his methods and example. Personally, I always enjoyed his columns in M&F back then. But now in my 40s, I relate even more to the messages in his last three books - the ones I mentioned above. And yes, I will use some of his methods and use him as an example to live healthy for the next three decades. And then, when I'm in my 70s, I'll read about how Clarence continued to train till 100 to motivate me to train another 30 years.

How Can A Group Health Insurance Broker Assist My Company?

Friday 18 January 2013

For many companies, the ability to provide group health insurance to their employees is a huge benefit that hard workers will truly value, especially if they have a family to take care of at home. However, sometimes the task of setting up a group health insurance program can be difficult for many new and smaller companies. Fortunately, a group health insurance broker can be readily and easily used to setup and administer such a program for any company desiring to provide health insurance to their valuable employees.

A reputable group health insurance broker will normally answer any questions a company may have about providing health insurance to the members of their company. For instance did you know that a group health insurance plan will only cover full time employees? Your group health insurance broker is responsible for providing answers to questions similar in nature. In fact, many health insurance companies define a full time worker or employee as someone that works a minimum of 30 hours a week at their place of employment.

In order to qualify for group health insurance a company must have at least 2 full time employees on the payroll. Naturally more is better and a group health insurance broker will advise a prospective company of facts just like this. Additionally at a minimum 50% or more of a company's full time staff must enroll in the offered group health insurance and coverage provided by the company. There are additional rules and regulations to follow when it comes to adding dependants and newborn children to an existing health insurance plan that covers an individual as part of a group.

When it comes to the cost of a group health insurance plan a broker will inform you that the company is required to provide or pay at least half of the health insurance premium for their full time employees. In most cases they are not required to cover any of the expenses associated with providing health insurance for an employees dependants.

One of the best benefits a group health insurance broker can provide assistance to a company with is the proper administration of their health insurance policy. Generally speaking it normally takes about a week for a health insurance provider to review any group health care plans submitted by a company hoping to obtain health insurance for it's workers. Sometimes this waiting period can drag on, especially if there is a multitude of paperwork that needs to be completed in order to obtain the health coverage.

Clearly, in the case such as the one mentioned above a knowledgeable group health insurance broker is worth their weight in gold as they can be tasked to properly prepare all of the administrative paperwork needed to complete the group health care coverage application. Their knowledge and expertise can also be used to handle or field any questions during the insurance underwriting process, which can sometimes be a very complex procedure.

As you can see the difficult process of setting up a group health insurance plan or coverage for the full time employees of a company can easily be managed and controlled with the helpful assistance of a group health insurance broker.

The Most Popular Drugs Abused Today

Monday 14 January 2013

Alcohol addiction is ranked as the third most life threatening lifestyle disease. In the United States, approximately 79,000 deaths per year are related to alcohol use. Alcohol is found in malt or distilled liquor, wine, regular beer and distilled spirits. The amount of alcohol present in these drinks differs, with distilled liquor and spirits containing the highest amount of alcohol. People get alcohol from bars and pubs, restaurants as well as supermarkets. Besides alcohol, the following are other most used drugs:

• Marijuana. This drug is legal in some countries, but illegal in the United States without a prescription from a licensed doctor. It has some medicinal properties that have been found to be specifically helpful to cancer patients. However, it is more often used as a narcotic for relaxation and entertainment purposes. Its abuse can impart adverse effects on the user. The side effects of this drug affect the memory and motivation of the user. Most people who abuse this drug get it illegally from drug dealers who are found in and around high schools, or even adult friends. Popular terms used to refer to marijuana include hemp and weed.

• Cocaine. This drug comes from coca, a plant that is popularly grown in Latin America. This drug has been used to make pain- killers and refreshing drinks, because of its medicinal qualities and impacts on the energy levels of the user. However, it is one of the most popularly abused drugs, especially by the rich. Abuse of this drug leads to hallucinations, paranoia and an increase in heart rate while using. Although it is completely illegal in the United States, cocaine users get it from drug dealers and it is fairly easily accessible.

• Adderall. This is medication that is prescribed by physicians as a remedy for ADHD. It can help calm down and focus those with ADHD but is also an appetite suppressant and reacts like speed in the average person's body. This medication has become more popular among college-aged kids and even new mom's because it helps with weight loss and keeps your energy level up throughout the day. Its side effects include temporary insanity while on the medication. It is easily accessible from your medical physician if ADHD has been diagnosed for someone in the family.

• Heroin. This is a highly addictive drug that was once used to relieve coughs. Today it is unfortunately one of the most popular illegal drugs in our high schools. It has been said that it's so addictive that trying it just once will get the person hooked. Side effects of Heroin use include shortness of breath, dry mouth, small pupils, cycles of hyper alertness followed by suddenly falling asleep and a droopy appearance. This drug is only accessible from drug dealers.

• LSD. This drug is illegal due to its life threatening effects. Its use is associated with visual hallucinations and strange experiences. Young people enjoy it because it takes you away from your daily troubles to a different, colorful, thought-provoking place. People who are high on the drug will often have dilated pupils, extreme changes in thought patterns, feelings on insight, confusion or paranoia and quickly changing emotions. While an individual is on LSD he is unable to make sensible judgments, which can lead to making dangerous choices. Long lasting side effects can include flashbacks and severe depression. People who abuse this drug get it from drug dealers.

For people who find themselves using any of these drugs in a manner that is adversely affecting their life, Alcohol and Drug Education classes online can help get on the road to sobriety.

All of these drugs mentioned can lead to serious health and behavior issues. Some include:

• Accidental injuries

• Risky sexual behaviors

• Violence

• Miscarriage

• Alcohol poisoning

• Neurological complications

• Cancer

• Social problems

• Liver diseases

• Cardiovascular diseases

• violence

Some of these effects are short-term while others are long-term and can eventually lead to death. Taking online classes can be a beneficial step towards recovery as they teach students information on the effects of alcohol and drug use, and how excessive use can lead to serious health issues.
